Officials said the car crossed the center line and slammed into the tree at 20 River Lodge Road in South Hadley just before 8 a.m., the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said. It's unclear what caused the car to veer off the road.

A Good Samaritan pulled the driver out of the wreckage, but South Hadley firefighters had to cut the 21-year-old passenger out of the car, state police said. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his name.

Responders rushed the driver to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries.

South Hadley police and state troopers are investigating the cause of the wreck.
